Secondary School Selection After PSLE
Once PSLE results are released, Singapore students must rank their secondary school choices for the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise. With over 130 secondary schools offering various programmes — Integrated Programme (IP), Express, Normal Academic, and Normal Technical — selecting the right school is both exciting and stressful.
This guide ranks the most competitive secondary schools by their 2024 PSLE AL cut-off, based on available data. Use our PSLE Score Calculator to see which schools your child qualifies for with their actual score.
Most Competitive IP Schools (AL Cut-Off 4–10)
Integrated Programme schools are the most selective — students skip the O-Level and sit A-Levels or an equivalent at the end of 6 years. These schools typically accept students with AL scores of 4–10.
| School | Programme | AL Cut-Off 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Raffles Institution | IP | 4–7 |
| Hwa Chong Institution | IP | 4–7 |
| Nanyang Girls' High School | IP | 4–8 |
| National Junior College (Sec) | IP | 5–8 |
| CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School (Sec) | IP | 5–9 |
| Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) | IP | 5–9 |
| Singapore Chinese Girls' School | IP | 6–10 |
Highly Selective Express Schools (AL Cut-Off 8–15)
These schools are the top non-IP secondary schools. They offer a rigorous O-Level curriculum with strong co-curricular programmes.
| School | Programme | AL Cut-Off 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Dunman High School | IP / Express | 5–10 |
| River Valley High School | IP | 6–11 |
| Victoria School | Express / IP | 7–13 |
| Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) | Express | 8–14 |
| Cedar Girls' Secondary School | Express | 8–14 |
| Tanjong Katong Girls' School | Express | 9–15 |
| St. Joseph's Institution | IP / Express | 7–13 |
How to Use PSLE Cut-Off Data
Cut-off scores are indicative, not guaranteed. Each year's cut-off depends on:
- The total number of PSLE candidates that year
- DSA (Direct School Admission) allocations (students admitted before the main posting)
- Available vacancies in each school and programme
- Student preference patterns
A school with a 2024 cut-off of AL 9 might accept AL 11 in a year with fewer top-scoring students. Use the data as a planning range, not a hard threshold.
Strategies for School Selection
- Research before posting: Use the PSLE Calculator to see all schools within your score range.
- Include a safe choice: Always include at least one school where your score is comfortably within the historical range.
- Consider location: A top school a 90-minute commute away may not be ideal compared to a good school 15 minutes away.
- Match programmes: IP suits students aiming for university; Express + O-Levels is a strong, flexible path for most students.
- Look at CCAs: School fit matters — choose a school whose CCA offerings match your child's interests and strengths.
