What is DSA?

Direct School Admission (DSA) is a scheme by MOE that allows Primary 6 students to apply to secondary schools based on specific talents, skills, or achievements โ€” entirely independent of PSLE results. Schools assess applicants through trials, interviews, auditions, or portfolio reviews.

If your child receives and accepts a DSA offer, they are committed to enrol in that school. They still sit for PSLE, but cannot use their PSLE results to transfer to another school during Secondary 1 to 3.

๐Ÿ’ก DSA is ideal for children with a clear talent who want to join a school known for that area โ€” e.g. a footballer applying to a school with a strong football DSA track.

Tips for DSA Applications

๐ŸŽฏ
Apply early, apply wide

You can apply to multiple schools under DSA. Don't wait โ€” slots fill fast. Apply to 2โ€“3 schools in your target talent area.

๐Ÿ“
Build a portfolio

Document achievements, certificates, competition results, and training records. Schools want evidence of sustained commitment, not just last-minute preparation.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธ
Prepare for the trial

Trials are the most important part. Ensure your child is well-practiced in their talent area. Some schools also conduct academic aptitude tests.

๐Ÿซ
Research school culture

DSA commits your child to the school for 4 years. Visit Open Houses, talk to current students, and understand the school's values beyond just its DSA track.

โš ๏ธ
Understand the commitment

Accepting a DSA offer means your child must join that school, even if PSLE results would qualify for a more prestigious posting. Discuss this decision carefully.

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ
Check IP vs Express pathway

IP schools let students skip O-levels (go straight to A-levels or IB). This suits academically strong students. Express pathway is more flexible.

Frequently Asked Questions

QDoes DSA guarantee admission even with a low PSLE score?
Yes โ€” if your child gets and accepts a DSA offer, they are admitted regardless of PSLE score. However, they still sit PSLE and the results are used for school reporting. Schools may consider minimum PSLE thresholds internally, so strong PSLE results help.
QCan my child apply for DSA in one talent area but be assessed for another?
Generally no. You apply under specific talent categories listed by each school. During trials, some schools may consider you for adjacent areas, but you should apply to the talent area you intend to pursue.
QWhat if my child gets multiple DSA offers?
Your child must choose only one offer to accept. All other offers lapse. Think carefully โ€” DSA commits your child to that school for secondary 1 to 3 (at minimum).
QAre there DSA vacancies for all secondary schools?
Not all secondary schools offer DSA, and those that do have limited vacancies per talent area. Popular schools may only offer 5โ€“20 DSA spots per talent area. Check MOE's DSA portal for exact vacancy numbers per school.
QMy child has not won competitions โ€” can they still apply for DSA?
Yes! DSA looks for genuine talent and potential, not just trophies. Sustained participation, training records, coaches' recommendations, and school representation can all count. Many DSA offers go to hardworking students without national medals.
