Integrated Programme (IP) Secondary Schools in Singapore: Complete Guide

By SGSchool Editorial Team

What Is the Integrated Programme (IP)?

The Integrated Programme (IP) is a 6-year course offered by selected secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore. Students who enter the IP at Secondary 1 are exempted from the O-Level examinations at the end of Secondary 4, proceeding directly to an alternative qualification at the end of Year 6 — typically the GCE A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, or the NUS High School Diploma.

The IP was designed for academically high-achieving students who would benefit from a broader, deeper curriculum that is not constrained by O-Level syllabus requirements.

IP Schools in Singapore

Currently, 13 secondary schools in Singapore offer the Integrated Programme:

  • Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) — leads to GCE A-Levels (ACS Barker)
  • Catholic High School — leads to GCE A-Levels
  • CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School — leads to GCE A-Levels
  • Dunman High School — leads to GCE A-Levels (SAP, IP)
  • Hwa Chong Institution — leads to GCE A-Levels (SAP)
  • Methodist Girls' School — leads to GCE A-Levels
  • Nanyang Girls' High School — leads to GCE A-Levels (SAP)
  • National Junior College — leads to GCE A-Levels (via River Valley High School)
  • NUS High School of Mathematics and Science — leads to NUS High School Diploma
  • Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) — leads to GCE A-Levels

PSLE Cut-Off for IP Schools

IP schools are among the most selective secondary schools in Singapore. Most require a PSLE AL score of 4–8 (lower is better under the AL system). The most competitive schools like Raffles Institution and Nanyang Girls' High School typically require AL 4 or below.

Use SGSchool's PSLE Calculator to see which IP schools your child qualifies for at different AL scores.

Benefits of the IP

  • No O-Level pressure: Students gain six years of continuous learning without the disruption of O-Level preparation.
  • Broader curriculum: IP schools can include enrichment subjects, research projects, service learning, and overseas programmes that O-Level schools cannot afford time for.
  • Strong peer communities: IP schools attract high-achieving peers, which can be motivating and intellectually stimulating.
  • Through-train to JC: Avoids the stressful O-Level to JC transition, providing a cleaner path to university.

Considerations Before Choosing IP

  • It is not for everyone. IP is designed for students who are genuinely motivated and academically strong. Struggling students may feel overwhelmed without the O-Level safety net.
  • No fallback year. If a student struggles in Year 3–4, there is limited ability to step down to Express stream without significant disruption.
  • Higher expectations. IP schools often have more homework, project work, and co-curricular demands than standard secondary schools.
  • Distance and culture matter. An elite school far from home with a culture that doesn't suit your child may produce worse outcomes than a closer, less prestigious school that's a good fit.

DSA vs PSLE for IP Schools

Some IP schools offer places through the Direct School Admission (DSA) exercise, which allows students with exceptional talent in specific areas (sports, arts, leadership, academic subjects) to apply before PSLE results. DSA applications are made in P6 (around June–July). A PSLE AL score is still required to meet the school's minimum entry requirements.

Is IP Right for Your Child?

IP suits children who are academically curious, self-motivated, and comfortable with a challenging, open-ended curriculum. Consider your child's attitude toward learning — not just their grades. A child who loves to explore ideas and works well without constant examination milestones will thrive in IP. A child who responds better to structured, milestone-based learning may do better in the Express stream with clearly defined O-Level goals.
