What Is the Learning for Life Programme (LLP)?
The Learning for Life Programme (LLP) is a MOE initiative designed to develop character and values in students through sustained engagement in either the performing arts or outdoor education. Where the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) focuses on academic enrichment through real-world application, the LLP is explicitly about developing soft skills — resilience, teamwork, leadership, empathy, and a sense of community belonging.
The LLP is not a co-curricular activity (CCA) in the traditional sense. It is a school-wide programme embedded into the school's culture and timetable, meaning every student at the school participates, not just those who choose it as a CCA. This makes it a significant differentiator between schools.
The Two LLP Streams
Performing Arts LLP
Schools with a Performing Arts LLP build their programme around music, drama, dance, or a combination of these disciplines. Students may learn to play instruments, participate in school-wide productions, study movement and choreography, or engage in scriptwriting and stagecraft. The goal is not to produce professional performers but to develop confidence, creativity, and the ability to collaborate — skills that translate directly into academic and personal life.
Performing arts LLP schools often have strong school concert traditions, vibrant aesthetics clubs, and active partnerships with arts institutions like the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Esplanade, or community arts groups.
Outdoor Education LLP
Schools with an Outdoor Education LLP use nature, adventure, and the environment as their vehicle for character development. Activities might include camping, orienteering, kayaking, rock climbing, or school-based gardening and sustainability projects. Students learn to manage risk, support one another, and develop a growth mindset through physical challenges.
These schools often have strong ties with the Singapore Sports School ecosystem, National Parks, or outdoor adventure organisations. Outdoor education LLP schools tend to place high value on physical fitness and environmental awareness.
How LLP Enriches School Life
The impact of an LLP goes beyond the specific activities. Because every student participates, the school culture reflects the programme's values. A performing arts LLP school tends to have a more expressive, creative atmosphere, while an outdoor education school tends to foster a resilient, adventurous spirit.
Parents often notice that LLP schools have:
- More elaborate school events and performances
- A broader range of enrichment in that domain (more music rooms, better sports facilities)
- Teachers who are trained in the LLP domain, providing higher quality instruction
- Students who are more confident and engaged in non-academic activities
Notable LLP Primary Schools in Singapore
Some primary schools known for their LLP programmes include:
- Methodist Girls' School (Primary) — performing arts LLP with a strong music tradition
- Fairfield Methodist School (Primary) — performing arts, with a focus on holistic development
- Greendale Primary School — outdoor education LLP
- Sengkang Green Primary School — environmental and outdoor education focus
- Innova Primary School — outdoor adventure education LLP
- Kranji Primary School — values-based outdoor education
This list is illustrative — not exhaustive. MOE updates school programmes regularly, and the best way to confirm a school's current LLP is to visit the school's official website or contact the school's general office.
How to Find If a School Has an LLP
There are several ways to find out whether a primary school offers an LLP:
- MOE's School Information Service: MOE maintains an official list of schools with their LLP details, accessible on the MOE website under the school's individual profile.
- School websites: Most LLP schools prominently feature their programme on their homepage or "About Us" section.
- SGSchool school profiles: Use SGSchool's school directory to browse schools and check their programme details, including LLP.
- School open houses: Many schools hold Open House events where parents can visit and speak with teachers about the LLP in action.
LLP and P1 Registration Strategy
If the LLP aligns with your child's interests or your family's values, it can be a meaningful factor in choosing a school. However, like ALP, LLP does not affect the registration phase structure — all children register through the same P1 phases regardless of a school's special programmes.
Use SGSchool's School Finder quiz to input your child's interests and receive a shortlist of matching schools, including those with performing arts or outdoor education LLP programmes.
