Best Primary Schools in Each Singapore Region (2024 Guide)

By SGSchool Editorial Team

How We Assess 'Best'

Singapore does not publish official school rankings, and MOE actively discourages direct comparisons. However, parents consistently look for schools that offer: strong academic programmes, enriching CCAs, special programmes (GEP, SAP, IP), and a supportive school culture. Balloting history is also a useful signal — oversubscribed schools tend to be oversubscribed for a reason.

We've selected schools in each region based on their programme offerings, Phase 2C balloting history, and overall parent reputation.

Central Region

The Central region is home to some of Singapore's most prestigious primary schools, many of which go to ballot every year.

  • Nanyang Primary School — The most sought-after primary school in Singapore. SAP school with exceptional academic results and a strong alumni culture. Expect Phase 2B to ballot.
  • Ai Tong School — SAP school in Bishan with a rich Chinese heritage tradition. Consistently oversubscribed.
  • Catholic High School (Primary) — Boys' SAP school with strong academic and CCA programmes. Phase 2C frequently ballots.
  • Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) — Long-established boys' school with strong GEP centre status and alumni loyalty.
  • Singapore Chinese Girls' School (Primary) — Top girls' SAP school with outstanding academic record.

North Region (Woodlands, Yishun, Sembawang)

The North has fewer elite schools than Central, but several excellent options that rarely ballot in Phase 2C — making them strong choices for parents who value certainty over prestige.

  • Admiralty Primary School — Well-regarded school with strong leadership programme.
  • Chongfu School — SAP school in Yishun, the only SAP school in the North. Competitive but less so than Central SAP schools.
  • Northland Primary School — Strong CCA offerings including sports and performing arts.
  • Yishun Primary School — Solid academic reputation with good student outcomes.

East Region (Tampines, Pasir Ris, Bedok)

The East has a mix of popular SAP schools, well-established neighbourhood schools, and schools with strong sports programmes.

  • Tao Nan School — Premier SAP school in Marine Parade. Frequently ballots even in Phase 2A.
  • Temasek Primary School — Strong academic school in Tampines with good CCA variety.
  • St. Patrick's School (Primary) — Mission school with strong community values and CCA programme.
  • Red Swastika School — Buddhist-based school with strong all-round development focus.

West Region (Bukit Timah, Jurong, Clementi)

The West includes Bukit Timah — often considered Singapore's most elite school district — alongside strong Jurong and Clementi schools.

  • Henry Park Primary School — GEP centre school in Bukit Timah. One of the most oversubscribed schools in Singapore.
  • Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School — Strong academic school in Bukit Timah, consistently balloted.
  • Clementi Primary School — Well-regarded neighbourhood school with strong community ties.
  • River Valley Primary School — Central-West location, popular with expat and local families.

North-East Region (Hougang, Punggol, Sengkang)

The North-East has grown significantly with new HDB estates, and several schools here have strong programmes with less competitive registration.

  • Rosyth School — GEP centre school in Serangoon. Very popular — Phase 2B frequently ballots.
  • Mee Toh School — SAP school in Hougang, popular with the Chinese-speaking community.
  • Springdale Primary School — Newer school in Punggol with modern facilities and strong STEM focus.
  • Punggol Green Primary School — Growing school serving the Punggol estate with good results.

Finding the Right School for Your Child

The "best" school is the one that fits your child's needs and your family's circumstances. A school that's right for a CCA-oriented child may not suit a child who needs extra academic support. Use SGSchool to:

  • Check each school's P1 registration history and balloting data
  • Filter by CCA to find schools with your child's favourite activities
  • Find schools within your distance priority zone using the "Near Me" search
  • Compare schools side by side on programmes, location, and special tracks
