P1 Registration Guide
Everything you need to know about registering your child for Primary 1 in Singapore.
Registration Phases
Late June
For a child who has a sibling studying in the primary school.
Registration is guaranteed. No balloting needed as long as the sibling is currently enrolled.
Early July
For a child whose parent is a member of the school's advisory or management committee, or whose parent is an alumni member who has joined the alumni association at least one year before registration.
Also includes children whose parent has been a parent volunteer with the school for at least 40 hours.
Early July
For a child whose parent or sibling has studied in the school, or whose parent is a staff member of the school.
Phase 2A1 and 2A2 share the same vacancy pool. Vacancies remaining after Phase 2A1 go to Phase 2A2.
Mid July
For a child whose parent has joined the school as a parent volunteer at least one year before registration, or is a member endorsed by the church/temple/clan/mosque/association connected to the school, or is a community leader active in the school's area.
This phase values community involvement. Parent Volunteer scheme applications typically open 1-2 years before registration.
Late July
For a child who is a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident and has not been registered in any school during earlier phases.
This is the most competitive phase. Priority is given to Singapore Citizens living within 1km of the school, then 1-2km. Balloting may occur.
Late July
For Singapore Citizens or PRs not yet registered. Applied to schools with remaining vacancies.
Second chance for families who did not secure a place in Phase 2C.
Late August
For international students.
Subject to availability. International students should also consider registering with MOE directly.
Home-School Distance Priority
From Phase 2B onwards, if a school is oversubscribed, places are allocated based on citizenship and home-school distance:
Singapore Citizens living within 1km
Singapore Citizens living between 1-2km
Singapore Citizens living outside 2km
Permanent Residents (same distance tiers)
Tips for Parents
- 1.Start early. If you're eyeing a competitive school, consider the Parent Volunteer scheme 1-2 years ahead.
- 2.Check balloting history. Use our school finder to see which phases are oversubscribed at your target school.
- 3.Distance matters. Living within 1km of your preferred school gives you the highest priority in Phases 2B and 2C.
- 4.Have a backup plan. Always identify 2-3 schools in case your first choice is oversubscribed.
- 5.Stay updated. MOE releases registration results after each phase. Monitor vacancies in real-time.
Balloting: Priority Groups & Distance
When a school is oversubscribed, places are allocated across 6 priority groups based on citizenship (SC before PR) and home-school distance (within 1 km, 1–2 km, beyond 2 km). Balloting occurs randomly within each group if that group itself is oversubscribed.
